I pass my gravel vac around the substrate as best as possible around and between plants. With full coverage, actually deep vacing is pretty near impossible, so just do your best, and keep up with the large weekly waterchanges too keep things balanced. The plants and their roots will take care of some of the gunk that gets down there. A few members tend to think that a yearly rip up and fresh start helps a lot.

I only gravel vac at the front of the 5ft tank and never gravel vac in the Betta tank. I wave a small gravel vac over the plants to pick up any gunk that is on the surface of the substrate and this is only a small part of the tank the remainder is impossible to get a vac any where near the substrate.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

If it is fully planted and there is no spaces naturally gravel vac cannot be done.
