Hello all, first i will start with a question. When you are starting up a planted tank, when should you add the first fertilizer, 3weeks, 4 weeks? I never really learned this bit of info when i started up my 1st tank, i added nutrients from day 1 and had major black beard algae problems.
Yesterday, while i was at my local petco i found and bought a huge lace java fern for $9.99. Was this a good deal, it had 29 leaves and an 8 inch rhizome. It was 11&1/2 in. tall and 8 in. wide with dozens of reproduction spots. It was also attached to a small piece of driftwood.

I was using a measured amount for my tank which was 2.5 ml every day. I had a small a algea problem, now I add 2.5ml at the water change and 2.5ml mid week. I am not having the algea like I had previously.

If it's just the java fern in that tank I wouldn't be adding ferts unless you're noticing that it has signs of needing additional nurishment.
I've always been an under-ferting person, I'd rather have slower growth than an algae issue....

I was asking when to add fertilizer, not how much. I suppose i will wait till the cycle is over. I do have more plants then just the lace java fern, here is the complete list-
-1 bunch of Ancharis
-1 bunch of unidentified stem plant
-1 bunch of some type of ludwigia which is probably on its way out
-2 anubias lanceolata
-1 java fern
-1 lace java fern.

I wouldn't bother. Most of your plants are slow growing, e to algal invasion. Ferts will just cause uneccesary trouble. If you want your plants to grow faster, try CO2 and medium wattage.

i don't use fertilizer in my tank, save for the occasional sechem iron i occasionally put in the tank.

speaking of which, i should do that soon...

My point behind not fertilising is that I don't actually have a filter on my tank, because the plants are my form of filtration.

Both my husband and I are low-tech kind of people, so we try not to add supplements to the water unless necessary.
