I have a variety of plants in my 20 gallon, but recently I've noticed that the backing of the flourecent bulb can become a bit overheated, even if left on for only 2-3 hours. so I'm wondering---how long must I keep my lights on for my plants to benefit but still be able to keep my bulb cool?

Regardless of heat, you still need 8 to 11 hours of light a day.

Hi,
First, the prior post is correct. The idea is to mimic
the tropical, noonday sun and that means the lights
should be on for about 10 -12 hours/day. IMO, I prefer
10 hours.

If your bulb is heating up so much that you are concerned
then there is something wrong, and I'd be replacing the
canopy, or checking to see if you might not have the wrong
bulb in it. Something is not right if it is truly that
hot.
