The idea is to mimic the tropical, noonday sun and that means the lights should be on for about 10 -12 hours/day. IMO, I prefer 10 hours. If your bulb is heating up so much that you are concerned then there is something wrong, and I'd be replacing the canopy, or checking to see if you might not have the wrong bulb in it.
