These are the plants I have in there currently:

Floating Bunch of Hornwort (i have read that this will cause algae sometimes, should i remove it?)

2 Weighted bunches of Myrio Filigree

2 Bunches Guppy Grass

1 Potted African Bolbitis (Bolbitis Heudelotti)

6 Real Live Plants Total so far...

and I am looking for:

Java Moss

Erect Moss or Willow Moss

Marsilea Quadrifolia (aquatic clover)

Java Fern Windelov

and possibly Water Sprite instead of the Hornwort

would that be too many plants?

there's no such thing as too many plants just be prepared to do a lot of maintenance on them if they start growing like crazy, which they will if you take care of them.

It adds another dimension to the tank real plants.

You will just have to maintain them by giving them fertiliser on a regular basis and trimming them so that don't fall appart in the tank.

Also a good 8 or so hours with the light on as well so that will grow and thrive.

Good luck.

Plants more the merrier. It does require a lot more thought and maintaince compared to the old plastic booring plants.
Yes you will require a good lighting system, mine is on for 12hrs per day using an automatic timer. I also fertilize once per week (I have a 5ft Anubias tank) these plants do not require a lot of maintaince or fertlizer.

I think you are confused on the info about the hornwort. Hornwort sucks up all of the same nutrients that algae uses and takes it away from the algae so there is much less algae. It is also said that hornwort expells an algae repellant chemical that makes it harder for algae to grow. I do not know how true this is though. If i were you, i would take the Bolbitis heudelotti out of the pott and attatch it to a piece of wood or stone. It grows much better this way. Can you post more about your lighting(kelvin rating, watts)? I am glad you decided to get into real plants, i find they are alot better than plastic ones.

Hornwort sucks out the nitrates, which can lead to an outbreak of cyanobacteria, otherwise known as bluegreen algae (which isn't an algae at all!). Trust me, it's happened to me. ]:|

On the other hand, I have a five gallon filled with nothing but slow-growing crypts and anubias which is starting to show cyano, too. I know THOSE plants aren't nitrate suckers! Could be that there's not a lot of waste production in there. Perhaps I need to add ferts...
