I recently purchased 4 Java Fern plants from an internet supplier and 2 of the plants have numerous black spots (I'm assuming these are seeds?) that are beginning to grow plantlets from them.

Is this typical of this plant? I was under the assumption that reproduction was from the ryzome. Was I mistaken in my assumptions?

I've recently detached more than 50 fernlets from two java ferns. The plants dont look great though, after they start reproducing that way..

Thank you for the links, Frank.

That information was really informative and helpful. I wasn't sure if this was the norm or not, but the plants that I received only consisted of 2 or 3 leaves. Like I said 2 of them had these black spots, which I now know are spores on the leaves and they are starting to produce a bunch of new ferns from them.

I need more plants so I guess that's good.
