Seven months ago I shut down my aqaurium and emptied it. The fish which I had were given to my daughters class at school. I had put some Java Moss in the tank for breeding guppies and gouramis. The moss literally took over my tank. It grew on wood, plastic plants, and even a ceramic cave I had. It kept clogging up my filter and I was starting to get frustrated. To make a long story short when I took the tank down I cleaned every thing. Then before setting the tank up I re-cleaned everything. My tank has been up 5 weeks and low and behold I have Java Moss growing in my tank again. Has this happened to anyone else or am I just the lucky one Java Moss is the same as snails to me How can I get rid of it I thought I had it licked Help...

Hi tina, the javamoss plant is a wonderful plant to me, as it is fast growing and covers every thing, but the problem you have is maybe because you didnt thoughroughly wash up everything. Did you clean the filter cartrige? What did you clean everything with? Did you put the wood bck in? This could be the problem as the little fuzzies could have been embeded deeply within the wood, and remerged when put back in the water. What about the gravel, maybe the fuzzies are in there? Please give us more details, and maybe we can come up with a solution.

PS- do you have anymore of the javamoss? Maybe you could sell it to people like me who want it? I will be happy to consider buying it if you are willing to sell. I just WANT the javamoss so badly. PM me if you agree to sell thanks again- GOBY

If you really want to get rid of everything, here's what you do:

Completely empty the tank. Throw out the gravel etc. and filter media.

Then make a solution in a bucket of 3/4 water, 1/4 unscented, plain bleach. Put all wood and decorations into the bucket, and let it soak for an hour or so. Then take everything out and rinse it all off. Fill up the bucket with a 4X dose of decholorinator and water. Let all the objects soak in that over night. Rinse everything off and repeat the process 2 more times.

Do the same with the tank itself. Bleach will kill anything living in any nooks and crannies. Dechlorinator will make sure the chlorine is removed from everything before using it again.

Back in the saddle!

I am not taking my whole tank apart again.. at least not for now. I took a much closer look at the wood and it seems to be the culprit more than anything. So I will follow the instructions of nowhereman. If this does not do it then... off to the store I go to buy new wood.

As far as the sale of Java Moss goes where was everyone last year oops sorry my fault for not joining sooner
