Anyone tried this yet?

I am thinking of getting something like a plastic woven mat and inserting bits of java moss into it and see how it takes off.

I have java moss growing around a log in my other tank and it takes over the tank so I may as well do something with it.

Works very well, although Christmas moss ends up looking a bit nicer. There's a couple of pages on this technique at http://www.killies.com.

Heya Troy,

Unless I'm terribly mistaken Christmas Moss is Fontinalis antipyretica.

You can buy it online in Australia from here:

http://www.aquamail.com.au/products.htm

(Just download the catalogue... there is a lot of good stuff on the site beyond that, including a rare/large plant catalogue)

I bought some at a LFS, it's often sold simply as "Fontinalis" here by the looks of things. I wouldn't mind betting if you asked nicely your LFS would get you some in with their next plant shipment.

Regards,
Dex

Here is yet another site that covers what you
are suggesting:

Fontanalis is Willow Moss - Christmas moss, as far as I know, lacks a definitive latin name. The formus at the aforementioned killie.com is always stuffed with moss debate - it seems like it's all the talk about! Christmas moss, taiwan moss, erect moss, mini moss, the list goes on. Anything you every wanted to know about moss, they're the guys for it.

D'oh, I always thought it was Christmas Moss after:

http://www.aquahobby.com/articles/e_lowlight.php

(and some other sites that now escape me)

but now I've read this thread and dug round some it seems I was mistaken.

Digging found:

http://naturalaquariums.com/plants/fontinalis.html

http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/plants/Leong_Mosses.html

Moss central (you're right about that site Mousling :%) *bookmarks it*):
http://www.killies.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1087

Thanks for the heads up Mousling
Dex
