My java fern leaves have been going brown and falling away from the main plant more than normal. It is atached to a peace of lava rock. I do regular water changes and my light is low (1.25 watt per gallon) the temp is 26C. It has shed leaves normaly for the last 3 years but it seems to be doing it more than normal. Does any one know what is wrong?

Check the rhizome. Is it soft and mushy, brown or green? Do you have hard water, or soft?
One thing that happened to me once was I had a bunch of java fern growing on a piece of wood, and the thin black roots grew so thick that they smothered the rhizome, making it rot and killing the plant. Basically, my java ferns committed suicide!

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I had that problem until i started adding some liquid ferts @ once a week with water changes. Try seachem's flourish. This is assuming that you doen't add ferts.

Thin black roots are usually a good thing I've never known java fern to choke itself out.....but what about the rhizome? That's the horizontal "stem" that all the leaves come off of. Is it buried or attached to a rock or driftwood? Hard or mushy? What kind of lighting do you have and how many watts?

yes it is attached to the rock and yes it is hard. and the roots a well in to the rock as well.
I have 2 bar lights which r both 25 watt one is a plant groth lamp and the other is a high out put tropical lamp
The plant light is the front bar and the tropical lamp is the back bar.
