I use java moss to help hide and protect my fry. They tend to go inside and among it and hide there till they are big enough, brave enough, and or dumb enough to come out...It tends to catch small food granuels, etc...and this is how the fry eat until they come out of hiding...pugperson uses it as a bed for her female betas......my pleco uses it as toilet paper...:%)and many people use it for decoration, though mine just floats wherever it wants...

When I've bought it it was sold to me in fist size balls/wads. It is really stringy; almost like a skein of baby yarn "gone bad" and come undone, and for lack of any other description mossy...and usually runs me about $3.00 US for this wad.

I've found a picture of it on another site, hope it helps...http://rcarchive.com/fish/gifs/fish/70tetra3.jpg

aquabid.com usually has some java moss for relatively cheap prices. Do not worry about buying not enough, it will double itself so quickly you will probably be cultivating soon!

Hey there,

I've bought some attached to a bioball with a piece of fishing line and a lead sinker at the end. Sold as a "topiary ball" at the pet shop at Macquarie Centre in North Ryde, NSW. (While some people may like the idea of a floating ball of green fluff midway in the water column, it didn't appeal to me, so I just removed it from the ball and attached it to a rock)

Alternatively, you could consider Willow Moss, Fontinalis antipyretica (aka Christmas moss, Amano moss)...

Going by some I bought, and also some reading I've done, it's all but identical to Java Moss (Vesicularia dubyana). The branching pattern is said to be somewhat different, but from what I've read F. antipyretica and V. dubyana are often confused and sold as the other (i.e. F. antipyretica sold as Java Moss, V. dubyana sold as Christmas Moss)

So far as buying it, or just about any plant in Australia.. have a look at http://www.aquamail.com.au/products.htm]http://www.aquamail.com.au/products.htm[/link] and download their catalogue. The list of plants/prices is also on [link=http://www.aquamail.com.au/plants.htm as well as a download link for their "rare/large plant" catalogue. In any case I think you have to download the main catalogue (in the first link) to get a copy of the order page and details about charges etc.

I haven't ordered from them, but they have been round for years, and the prices seem quite good

Regards,
Grant
