I want to try to attach some java moss onto a piece of bog but the bog wood is coated in short hairy algae, which looks extremely hard to get off unless I left the bogwood to dry - which I want to avoid.

Will it be OK to try to attach the Java moss to the bogwood over the algae?

Thanks.

I wouldn't do it, clean it first. Boiling the wood in a pot of water should work. You can use some hydrogen peroxide to kill and soften the algae first if you want, it will come off easier that way.

About the algae though, you'll want to address the reason you have it growing on the wood and fix it.... what colour is it? And could you give some more info about your tank - fert routine/co2, lighting, plant mass, stocking, etc.?

I don't know about the water parameters but then again, I don't think it matters at the moment. 2 weeks ago, the tank was quite highly stocked with an assortment of community fish. I have since moved all those fish on to another, much tank and it now only houses a pair of Blue Acara and a baby Bristlenose pleco.

The algae, which is black in colour and quite furry looking, is inherited from the old set up. The tank has a powerful cannister filter (relative to it's size of 23UK gallons), a light and that is about it equipment wise ... and a heater of course.

Thanks.

Hi,
You will want to remove the piece, scrub and boil it
in an attempt to get rid of it.

Check out this site for the types of algae and
how to rid the tank of it:

Dipping with hydrogen peroxide will soften it enough to remove it, just rinse it a lot after you're done.

Fishy I have that Algae too!

I took out all the wood that had it on ages ago (and replaced)and left it in the shed! the algae turns purple in the sun and STILL doesn't come off! I did scrubb it in the end under very hot water so I guess boiling is the answer......

my common pleco likes to eat it which i think is a miracle and I love him for it!(the 35G is the only one that hasn't had to be refitted and almost over planted to get rid of it!)

Good luck
GFG

raising CO2/carbon usually helps with BBA.... if you're having problems with it, I'd try that first.

I have a Co2 unit arriving for that tank soon. If that does not work, might just sling the piece and get a new one!

Thanks guys (& gals).
