I have a large piece of driftwood in my tank, and it used to be covered with Java moss (until the snails ate it!). I'd like to get more Java moss, but I have since added 2 common Plecos, and know that they need access to driftwood in their diet.

If I plant Java moss on the driftwood, will the plecos still have access to it? Or will I have to "prune" the moss?

Thanks!

I'm betting your plecos will let you know if they aren't happy with java moss on their wood. I've been trying for weeks to get java moss to grow on part of a large piece of driftwood in my tank, and my pleco seems to be able to untie the line holding it down and he sweeps it all into a corner of his tank.
I personally think that driftwood looks great partially covered in moss with parts of the wood still exposed. It requires a bit of pruning, but it should keep you, your moss, and your plecos happy. If it's a branchy piece, you could put moss just on the main body of the wood and it will take quite a while to spread to the branches.
How big is your tank, btw, that you can keep 2 plecos?

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

My tank is a 55 gallon. So, although I can keep the 2 plecos now (one is about 4", the other about 3", there will come a time when I'll have to find a new home for at least one of them (or set up the other 55 g tank that I have in the garage!).

i thought about the same question, but i looked at my drift wood, and noticed the pleco hang out a lot at the under part of the wood, and i dont think plants would be able to grow under there because it is too dark, so maybe the top of the wood will be covered in moss, but there are still room underneath for the plecos
