I went to the shops yesterday and bought a 'lizard plant' for my aquarium that I am starting over with.

Has anyone ever heard of a lizard plant? It has very broad leathery leaves and the collour is (to me - Im red green collour blind) an emerald green collour.

Also I bought a 'rock fern' - looks like a java fern. is it any differant from one?

anyhow, I have them in a 30 gal tank with 2 plant gro 35w lights in an aqua one double reflector. Hope these grow .

Sounds like they just decided to make up some odd interesting names for common plants. You'll probably have to post a picture or go look through the pics on [link=http://www.tropica.com/default.asp]http://www.tropica.com/default.asp" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link] or [link=http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide.php]http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide.php" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link] to be certain what the plants are.

I agree it is a common name problem. At my local Pet/LFS when they order in plants they have no idea what they are they only have a very poor set of photo.
Also too plants have too many common names. This will require a good photo fore sure.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://
www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/forums/profile.asp?userid=6741" style="COLOR: #00FF00[/link] for my tank info

It is Lizard Tail, a bog plant. I am not sure of it's life expectency fully submerged.

As meg there stated, it is a lizard tail. It will eventually grow up to the surface and out of the water. It is a bog plant, and does best when the leaves reach out of the water. The flowers will only appear out of the water. If you have the lid off the tank, and your lighting elevated over it, it will do fine.

Recognised this on sight.

My old 1970s back numbers of TFH have a feature on this plant.

It's a plant that prefers to grow with at least some foliage emerging from the water if possible, and thus makes an excellent plant for, say, a half-filled aquarium set up as a paludarium. When conditions are to its liking, the flower spikes appear (it is these that give the plant its common name, incidentally), and it is possible to grow new plants by pollinating the flowers and collecting the seeds for cultivation.

Oh, be advised it's a slow grower.

Inside this is true, but this is a plant that you can also put in the pond. If placed in a pond, it will winter over nicely, and come back to grow app 2-3 feet out of the water each year.
