Another way of going to do it is to spread out the purchases so they appear on seperate credit card bills, and to pay the in store purchases in cash.

This way you can't track how much you spend on this stuff and it makes you feel better about it, at least this worked for me

Should rename you Sneaky_Little_Fish, I thought only women were that sneaky when hiding the cost of their purchases from their hubbys!

Yes in the long run starting out low-tech will cost more, but I'm glad to have had the long learning curve with a planted tank that I have. There's no way I was ready for a high-tech set-up when I first got the tank! It's good to be prepared for what a planted tank needs and be ready for the challenges that arise from them. Now through my experience and what I'm learning here I finally feel ready for those challenges, I would probably have wanted to shuck the whole thing the first time I had a serious emergency if I had started out with CO2 and 4wpg! To each his/her own, we all our own way of doing and learning, and as much as possible I think we should stick with what we are comfortable with doing and only move out of that zone when we are ready.
Note I am feeling philosophical now that I know I have not been banned from the site.
