tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | A couple of new pics: The first is one showing the tank next to my 72g. It show how little this nano really is. My wife actually like the little guy and said "Why don't you get one for the otherside. Sooo, who am I to disagree , I guess I'll see how this one does before I fulfill my wife's request. My Scapes |

tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | and finally since Wings asked for it. A closeup of the new nano. To be honest, I might not keep the hairgrass. I thing it might look better with riccia filling up the back and mid and I was actually looking for some glosso to plant in the front, but I couldn't find any locally. As I said this was all done locally in one day. When I bought the rocks in Petland Discounts, they just happened to have dwarf hairgrass. My Scapes |

I'm sorry tetratech, that just cracked me up. I think it looks pretty darn good for a one day old baby. EDIT: I was laughing so hard I forgot to comment on how much I like those rocks. Except mine, of course I like the small tank, and given the low cost of the whole setup it is for sure worthwhile to experiment with it. I am just glad tetratech didn't fill it up with Wisteria Ingo |

I don't think it'll be a problem with large WCs a few times per week. This isn't exactly high light/ high stocking here, you don't have huge plant mass either, and there isn't a ton of area in the tank. |

Well I do have 26 wpg on I'm using water from the 72g, so I am treating it like a highlight tank w/excel. I'm torn between taking fresh water and excel or using tank water. Mr Wizard, Thanks for the comments, yeah hopefully it will fill in, will see. My Scapes |

Wingsdlc Fish Guru What is this? Posts: 2332 Kudos: 799 Registered: 18-Jan-2005 | I'm torn between taking fresh water and excel or using tank water.I am in the same boat with my 2G Hex. I have been using water from my 40G to do the 1G WC but I just finished my pythhon system so its not as easy to remember to take the water out for the 2G. The thing I don't like about the idea of doing freash water WC's is then you have to use ferts and with a small tank you can go over board in a split second. With water from my 40G I know that I am adding in only about 15ppm of Nitrates onces a week. 90% of my plant mass is Java Moss so how much ferts will I really need in this thing? Just seems simpler for me to use water from the 40G. What have you been doing in the 12G? Weren't you doing water from the 72G at one time? 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

I think I was for a while, but now I'm adding fresh water for WC and adding pinch of Flourish for some micros. I fiqured the fish and some food will give off enough macros since it's lowlight and pretty heavily stock for a 12G. The new nano has (I think) alot of light and no fishload so I feel like I should add water from the 72g. My Scapes |

tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | Right now my big concern with the tank is flow - there is none. I'm not sure plants need this to survive or if it's a species thing. I have my first fauna in the tank. Two CRS and a small I think pond snail. How's that for flow? My Scapes |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | tetratech, No flow would worry me as well, but I would not know of any other way to create flow than to add some kind of pump to the tank. What kind of pump this would be though is another problem in itself. Ingo |

mattyboombatty Moderator Tenellus Obsessor Posts: 2790 Kudos: 1507 Votes: 1301 Registered: 26-Mar-2004 | IMO there's no reason for flow in such a small volume of water. The reason for flow is either to bring dirty water to a filter, mix up the water so there's basically similar water params everywhere(dead spots, stale water), or to try to keep detritus and food and whatsit from settling. Basically you should be doing water changes frequently enough to take care of the "filtration" and stale water plus such a small volume of water MUST have the same qualities everywhere, and there won't be any detritus or food of significant quantity without fish. Of course some flow won't hurt anything, so if you figure a way to do it inconspicuously that suits your needs (again)I say go for it. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |

tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | Been a while since I updated this log, unfortunately I had a big mishap in my small little tank. When your dealing with 0.5 gallons it's very easy to overdose and I'm pretty sure I did this with Excel. The tank only requires a drop or two which I believe are called units, but I probably put a couple of millilitres in. That evening the tank was getting cloudy and by morning the tank was very cloudy and all my shrimp were dead, even my Ninjas. I also think the overdose killed my riccia. The hairgrass is actually doing well and I could see new runners forming and roots against the side of the cube, but the riccia looks like it was nuked. My only other thought is that thre riccia doesn't grow in completely still water. Any thoughts? My Scapes |

Wingsdlc Fish Guru What is this? Posts: 2332 Kudos: 799 Registered: 18-Jan-2005 | An over dose of Excel can melt plants in a blink of an eye. I have done it to Crypts before. I am not sure the effects on your riccia though. Chances are it is what took out your shrimp too but maybe it was too much of a bio load for too small of a tank too. Just my thoughts on the matter. 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

I wish I could comment on the excel, but I've actually never used the stuff. I've never tried growing riccia in .5G tank either.
