I have done it for about 6 months now and have had great results. It works very well. What you will need: 1 large bucket/fish tank some plants that you want to grow. water time We all do those nice water changes either weekly or bi weekly. When you do, have u noticed the nasty "gunk" that always finds it's way to the bottom of the bucket? We all know that nitrates aid plant growth. Well, in the first month, use the water change water and put it in the bucket. Add the plants. Make sure to put the gunk in the bucket. This is basically a large concentration of nitrates. Each month, add more "gunk." As it decomposes, the plants will feed. In a few months, you will have more plants than space. |

BUT... BEFORE everyone throws away their python... That only applies to tanks that are low tech and under stocked. If you cant stand having a lush green jungle with just a few flashes of color (fish) DO NOT try not changing the water. Get a copy of the ECOLOGY OF THE PLANTED AQUARIUM and read it FIRST. Basically that water changes are bad for non CO2 planted tank (well bad for the plants that is). But why is that ? I'm sure it's more then building up nitrates, there'd be more nitrates in a heavily stocked tank anyway. Would there not be a shortage of trace elements that we normally introduce with fresh water (or do you make up with ferts).Definately would love to hear some elaboration (I'm still eager to learn !) I'm very curious about this. I do weekly 25% changes on my fully stocked tank. This is probably overkill, nitrates never get above 10ppm, but it's a (good) habit from my non planted days. I've been thinking to change this to fortnightly, mainly to cut back on work, water change and plant maintenance can take 2-3hrs on a Sun morning. So thinking one week plant maint, one week water change. If there is actually an additional benefit in my reducing water change I'd be most glad to hear it ![]() Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability. |
