Hey All,

Its time for me to find some gravel for my 4' tank.

I'm after something small, but not like sand, mid brown in colour and high in Iron, but will not raise PH.

Is there any brands, websites l should be looking at?

The reason for the high in iron is coz I'm planting some plants and would like the gravel to give them some feed.

I'm l correct in asking for something like this?

Oh.. and l have to be able to get it in Australia, prefer Melbourne.

Cheers

I use 1mm gravel that's very smooth and light brown in color (I can find them here in Brisbane, so I'm sure they're available in Melbourne too). You need at least a 3-5cm layer of it for easy planting. You can use a layer of laterite (cheap) on the bottom of the gravel for the iron supplement.

AquaOne has a red-coloured plant substrate.

I use a large sand blasting sand (1/16th - 1/8". You can see a picture. I put a thin layer of laterite through the middle and the plants love it. The two red swords have doubled their leaves.

How about Blackburn Aquarium 9898 6222
They have a very large range of very good gravel. I am in Rosebud and that is where I had to get mine from. As far as the Iron I have no idea but they should be able to contact their supplier amd get a few answers for you.

Please let me know how you go.

I would just like to say thank you to keithgh for recommending Blackburn Aquarium.

Susan is such a nice person and helped me a lot.

Also l must be one of the luckiest persons in the world... They had in the back of their shed some "Iron Rock" gravel. This is the stuff l have been after for about 2 months and no other shop either knows about it or can get it anymore.

Ended up taking all the bags (63kg in total) and it was just enough for my 4' tank. at AU$4 a kilo it was well worth it.

Glad to have helped. That Aqu is not big in size but is bigger in very helpful service.
Always pays to promote a good LFS
