New small echinodorus species | |
upikabu Fish Addict Posts: 591 Kudos: 393 Votes: 44 Registered: 08-Jun-2005 | Hey All, Just read this on the tropica site: http://www.tropica.com/article.asp?type=aquaristic&id=634 Dunno about you, but I'm excited that there are more small swords (and beautiful ones too!) that we'll be able to use in smaller tanks and as midground and foreground plants. I love swords for their ease of maintenance (no pruning and no melting!) but too many of the common swords just get too darn big! -P |

I really really like swords but as you say they just get too big.I only know of 2 or 3 that fill fit in my tank. I'm hoping my Uruqayensis won't get any taller it's pretty prefect at it's current height (1 1/2 feet tall). Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability. |

Awesome that a plant can have two very different coloured leaves. Hmm, I wonder how long these things usually take to get to regular consumers' hands. Probably not in my lifetime, not if I stay here anyway. -P |

But I'm sure Bensaf will have it before us, upikabu. It's one thing for it to make it to the market, it's another thing to make it to the US. Gorgeous plant, though. |

I've got Tropica plants here before and I'll certainly be on the look out for these Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability. |

upikabu Fish Addict Posts: 591 Kudos: 393 Votes: 44 Registered: 08-Jun-2005 | Bernard - if I'm not mistaken, I think I've read somewhere (probably Indonesian plant forum) that there is (or at least was) a Tropica distributor ba Nevertheless, you can probably smuggle it from Singapore. Man, sometimes I wish I live in Hong Kong or Taiwan. I just read the regulation for importing new (non-approved) live aquatic plants into Australia today. Among other things, if there's a snail or snail egg on any plant, the whole lot will be destroyed even before going to quarantine. They also require at least a 3-month quarantine in an approved facility. So basically slim chance to none of them actually making it to your damn tank! -P |

If non responsible people would just stop dumping things where they were not supposed to we wouldnt have these problems. If we want things we have to break laws, and the only reason we have to break the laws is because someone was breaking the law before and ruined it for all of us. But it could be worse, the genetically altered danio that are red coloured, the california agraculture leader stated the reason that he wont allow them in california is because it is not gods will for that animal to be that way and he wont let any animal that goes against gods will into california! Can you belive that?! |

Have to plan a trip. When you coming back here again, fancy a drive down ? There's a member on APC living in Bandung , got a 600 gallon planted tank in his yard Some good shops down there I believe. Sound like a plan ? Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability. |

Bensaf, I think you just need to send a bunch of plants to us here in the US. I am sure if you hooked tetratech, LF, Nowherman, or myself up with some sweet plants we would spread the wealth. 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

bensaf Fish Master Posts: 1978 Kudos: 1315 Registered: 08-Apr-2004 | Yep. Rockwool. Plants shipped to the US in rockwool are not allowed. Bare rooted plants are ok. Tropica sells all it's plants in pots. The market is not big enough for them to treat the US separately. Tropica can and do ship to Canada. FRANK Moderator Posts: 5108 Kudos: 5263 Votes: 1690 Registered: 28-Dec-2002 | Hi, I guess there must be two types of "rock wool." I frequently see plants in the LFS and the larger wharehouse stores in plastic pots with what I've been calling "rock wool" for years. NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | But what is it about the rockwool that makes it illegal to enter into the US? Is it because they hide contraband inside? Are there laws against bringing fiber with too much iron into the country? Is the chosen rockwool made in Iran or Cuba, or some other country "hostile to US interests"?? I mean, really, what's going on here. Someone has to know the answer to this... |

bensaf Fish Master Posts: 1978 Kudos: 1315 Registered: 08-Apr-2004 | I guess there must be two types of "rock wool." I'm not sure if it's rockwool per se. Rather it's plants in rockwool that can't be imported, roots must be bare. So yes you will see plants in rockwool in your LFS but they would not have been imported that way - at least not legally. There was a big fuss about this on APC a while back, I'll try to find a link to the thread. Lot's of hobbyists in the US would love to be able to get their hands on Tropica plants.
