I'm going to be getting a cheap Nutrafin CO2 unit. I know that they sell those little "Activator" and "Stabilizer" packets, but isn't there some way to use your own stuff? What are they made of? I know one should be yeast, the others something, and they say to add sugar too in the manual.

I also know that this CO2 thing is made for small tanks, like 30 gallons. Would there be ANY difference or help in a 55, or even a 135 gallon tank?

The Activator is 1/4 teaspoon of yeast and the stabilizer is the same amount of baking soda.

Honestly, one of these on a large tank probably isn't going to do much of anything. Several of them, maybe ... but at that point you'd be better off just getting real CO2.

I think it would help some in a 55, but you probably wouldn't notice anything in the 135. Right now I'm running 2 DIY 2liters on my 38G tank to get over 15ppm of CO2, but you don't have to have over 15 ppm to notice a little difference or for your plants to get some benefit from it.

Hi,
Generally speaking a 30 gallon tank is about as large a
capacity tank as those type of units can handle, and
make any real difference. At 30 and over, I would use
bottled gas.

Yes, if it was possible at all I would use bottled gas, and have a real CO2 kind of thing. Unfortunately, it isn't. There is NO was I'll be able to afford to get a nice CO2 setup, which is why I jumped on this one, being to cheap.

I have the recipe, you have to mix it at the right temp. Crazygar's recipe (looking for it and will be right back) I've mixed it about 5 times and it works great.

Once you're used to that recipe, SunflowerGrl Tsu, now Pisces girl, has another recipe.

quarter teaspoon yeast, quarter teaspoon baking soda.. with the regular sugar amount. Mix with 75 F water, stir well then cap tight. Within 10 minutes you'll see bubbles.

For a 30 gal one unit is perfect.. For larger tanks I'd say one unit per 30 gal.. At that point you may want to do the coke bottle / diffuser setup.
