Java ferns do fairly well in low light, but they will grow very slowly, so watch out for algae. Attach the fern to a rock or small piece of sinking wood. Is there any filtration or water movement (airstone) going on in this bowl? If there is, you can keep four to six small shrimp or a mystery snail (as long as you do weekly partial water changes because the snails are quite messy) in the bowl.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

If you aren't going to have much light above the tank, I think you are limited to java fern, java moss, and anubias species. Anubias nana petite would probably do well in the bowl if you can find it.
