Just have a question about Java ferns. And need help ID-ing a floating plant.

Anyway, I have a couple of Java ferns in my tank right now that have new plants growing on their leaves (runners, I think they're called ) and I'm just wondering if/when I can detatch them and plant them. Do they detatch on their own if the roots find adequate substrate or do I hafta take em off myself?

As for the floating plants, I recently aquired a bunch of them from my LFS for free, and consequently didn't get the name of them. It has very thin leaves, and it kind of reminds me of lettuce. It almost looks like water sprite, but te leaves seem much broader (I've never had water sprite as a floater, so I dunno, it might be it after all). I'll take a few pics in a few hours once the sun comes up, and stick em in here if no one can figure it out before then.

With the Java Ferns I would leave them alone until they get a good size before you think of attaching them. You can take them off and they will continue to grow but a word of caution they are very slow growers and they will get lost in that floating "Water Sprite" one it gets established it grows like a weed it is an excellent cover for live bearers. I have a lot in my 5ft tank the Gourami just love it. I would toss out several hand fulls each month.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Ah thanks for the info. That would probably explain why the guy was so keen on me taking some of it with me

So anyway, it -is- a water sprite? Can I plant in in the gravel even though it's been growing as a floater?
