how much light do u have (and how long is it on for) and high is the water above the leaves? what are your water conditions (temp nitrate pH etc.)? do u use co2? browning plants is usually a sign that theyre not happy. are there any new leaves coming through? attaching of plant to rocks etc is usually done with some nylon string like fishing line. just tie the rhizome down but not too tightly

its most likely that there may not be enough light for them. what size is light? the light is on for a good time and should be able to travel through that amount of water even if u only have 15w. if u have an airstone running then that will decrease the amount of co2 in the water. if the tank is new then it may just be that they have nothing to feed on. but these symptoms dont really sound like nutrient difficiency IME. what kind of bulb are you running ie: do u know what the K number is? 6700K or 18,000K for high wattage 6700K is fine but with lower wattage i found that higher K is better because the blue light penetrates water more effectively.

I know some plants get brown spots if there's not 'nuff iron...you may want to look into that...

yeah yellowing of the leaves can be mineral diffeciency most commonly as a result of the lack of Fe. IME the leaves become brittle and disintegrate if disturbed. as this wasnt described i didnt really think too much more about it. if the leaves are yellowing but the veins are doing less so then it might be a Mn difficiency. it might be a sign of K deficiency if the yellowing started at the margins of the leaf. browning/ yellowing of the leaves is pretty much a symptom of everything that a plant doesnt like.

if linkin could give us some more history on the tank like were medications used in the past 2-3 weeks. wattage of the light and K. is co2 injection used. if so how much. is fert used. if so how much and what type. maybe we could track the problem down from the source rather than the symptom.

Java ferns do get brown spots naturally. Are they just spots, or is the whole leaf looking brown and sickly? Are they squishy or firm to the touch? The brown spots are some kind of reproductive spore or something. They can thrive in under 1 watt per gallon, so I'm doubting that they're lacking light. It could also be brown algae coating the leaves. Are they slimy? Try getting a few ottos if that's the case.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...
