JBL, Red Sea, & Dupla also make specialized substrates for planted tanks (I'm sure there are others as well). Or you can go the cheap route and use a la -P |

Some plants develop a larger, or complex root system than others. Amazon Swords, for instance, are primarily root feeders and develop huge root systems accordingly. Over all, folks use between 3 and 4 inches of substrate in a planted tank. That takes care of them all.
