IME hornwort doesnt quite like the warmer temps but others seem to have had no trouble with it reaching higher than that :%). ^_^ [hr width='40%'] It only hurts when I breathe" ![]() |

Specific plants might require special conditions. Also remember the substrate could be 2-4C lower than the water temp. I have checked mine (I have a UGF) and it is basically the same as the tank temp. Reason being the warm water is constantly pasing through the substrate. Most good Aquarium plant books will give you a guide as to what is the best temperature for that particular plant. The substrate can also be heated up by placing the tank onto a heat pad as used in the horticulture nursery trade. I usually just treat it at what temp the tank was at anyway and haven't lost a fish. The only plants I've had trouble with in my higher temp tank is hornwort and java fern. They grow fine in the unheated river tank and the tanks kept at 78F but not the one at 82. |

It may slow growth down a tad but they'll be ok. A few plants will suffer. I find that Java Fern and Moss don't like heat. My own tank is usually at 80o as I live in the tropics and don't need a heater. Plants do fine. I find if the temp gets up to 86o they start to suffer. Keith is correct though 26o is optimum for growth. A few dgrees higher and lower and they will survive. Colder water holds more gas(CO2, N2, O2 etc) at equilbrium than warmer water. It'll also slow growth down if the temps are lower. Regards, Tom Barr |
