I have plants in my tank that are grow very very well. Quickly as well. I put in some fertilizer that the fish shop recommended but I can't remember what it is called. I will post agian once at home and let you guys know what it is as I know that there are different types of fertilizers to put in to do different things.

So the plants are greeny-yellow. Now would this just mean I need to put other a different fertilizer in that will help colour????

If that was a house or garden plant the answer would be an Iron Deficiancy. Not being a plant Aquarium expert that is possibly the answer. I know the plant fert I use has Iron in it.

yellowing is a very good sign of iron defeiciency, or to low of light

Iron or light.

If they are growing well we can assume light is ok. If growing very very well they may have used up all available Iron. If it's a fast grower like Hygro that's affected Iron is the likely culprit.

Most all liquid ferts have Iron. You may need to up the dosage a bit and see if there is an improvement. If it's a fast growing plant it will recover quickly.

You could look at changing your doasge regime. Iron oxidises very quickly. Instead of adding one dose weekly you can spread the dose daily or every second day over the course of the week ensuring their is always some Iron available.

Thanks.

Is there just an iron fertilizer??? as I like the one I am using at the moment but haven't looked at what it does. There would be more fertilizers that would have higher iron in them???

Thanks for the help. Yes the light is sufficent as the plants grew even without the fertilizer really well.

Yes, there are iron only fertilisers such as Seachem's Flourish Iron and I think Kent are doing one as well called FE and there are probably more out there.

It's a bit hard to compare the iron content of fertilisers as most of them don't even state the what they have and how much. The only exception I know of is Tropica's Master Grow, but I've not seen all fertilisers, of course.

A good sourse for Seachem's Flourish products is http://www.petsolutions.com/Default.aspx Their prices are much better than I have found in my LFS's and they are pretty quick on the shiping.

I am not sure if they ship out of the USA though. Sorry if they don't, I never even thought out side of my little box!

Just be careful when dosing the Iron. Too much can throw things out of whack and can lead to some nasty thread algae.

There's also a chance that if the Iron is insufficient that other micros may also be low, it's just that Iron shows up faster and is easier to spot.

What fert are you using at the moment ? Almost all good liquids have a decent amount of FE and balance the other micros around that. So in the meantime you may still try to increase slightly your current fert and see if it makes a difference. If it does keep to the new dosage going forward.

For iron problems I like to use root tabs instead of liquid ferts.... I use these ones:

They only need to be replaced once a month, all you do is stuff the tabs down into the gravel and forget about them. They work just as well as liquid ferts (if not better) for lower cost and much less maintenance. I give my filters a good cleaning once a month, and just replace the root tabs at the same time.[/font]
