Plants in new aquarium turning brown | |
ca416295 Small Fry Posts: 7 Kudos: 4 Votes: 2 Registered: 22-Oct-2007 | I setup my new aquarium about 5 days ago, and put three live plants in. Unfortunately, I didn't get the names of the plants, but something's not right with the biggest one. It kinda resembles a pine tree, but the needles radiate out from the stem in little discs. It's a pretty big plant, and it's growing like crazy. It’s now touching the top of the tank. When we bought it, it was 3-5 inches below the water. Anyway, the tops of all the 'needles' are turning brown. I have a plant fertilizer, and I’ve been using it as directed, once a week. I also have the lights on a 10 hour timer from 11AM to 9PM. I’m just wondering why my plants are turning brown!? Could it be too much light? Too little? Not enough fertilizer? I have 5 fish in the tank, and all appear ok so far. Any suggestions? Troy |

I've found they grow better when you take the weight off, trim the ends of the stems, and plant the stems individually. Also, after a while, the older stems tend to die off some. ><> |

You mention 10hrs that should not be a problem but the type of light could be. Also as mentioned are the plants still tied together if so this could also be the problem but in that case I think they die back from the ba Finally I don't think the tank would be fully cycled yet but this does not cause a problem BUT it again "could" with the plants you have. I had to plant them singly by the stem, just tucking them into my gravel, taking care not to go too deep. Occasionally, they pull out and I re-set them...
