Just wondering, can any plants at all be grown in sand substrate? If so, are there any high-light ones?

From what I have been told you want to say about from a planted sand sub. tank. This is because you are not going to be vacing most of the tank if its a heavly planted tank. This will cause compacting sand which will loose room for your bacteria.

You'd be better off with plants that grow on wood or rocks instead of in the sand. Java fern, mosses, and anubias would some. All of which are low light. Sand has little nutrients for plants and even with regular stirring it will compact around the roots some.

It's better to get some Anubia's & tie them on wood. Usually the Sand will crush the Plant Roots & they wouldn't grow & survive much.

Hi,
If you use sand, and you use the "normal" substrate depth
(3-4 inches thick) then you run the risk of compacted areas
becomming anaerobic with all the problems that follow.

However, if you use a thin layer, say an inch, then many
plants will not stay rooted (anchored) and will float to
the surface.

IMO, sand is not the best substrate for a planted tank.
