So as not to disturb the lower level of your substrate wave your vacuum tube above the surface of the gravel stirring up the settled mulm and syphon up as much of it that way as you can.

Hi,
If you set up the tank in the "normal" fashion, each layer
should be about an inch and a half thick. You should plant
the plants in the upper layer and the roots will grow down
into the clay layer. To clean the upper layer do as
Jim suggests. Waive your hand or the siphon tube over the
surface of the gravel to stir up any loose detritus into
the water column where you can then siphon it off.

Hi there GFG

What kind of substrate is that anyway. I assume the light gray is some gravel and the darker part is some enriched substrate. Is this how it looks on top of the substrate now, meaning: are there two distinct areas?

Basically, as has been said, if the substrate in itself is very light and would be sucked up by the vacuum, then don't dig into it. Swish the tube back and forth over it a few times, that should stirr up the gunk (or use your other hand to do so, but not too wildly). Then suck that stuff out

Hope this helps,

Ingo
