You should plant the plants in the upper la into the clay la Jim suggests. Waive your hand or the siphon tube over the surface of the gravel to stir up any loose detritus into the water column where you can then siphon it off. I assume the light gray is some gravel and the darker part is some enriched substrate. Is this how it looks on top of the substrate now, meaning: are there two distinct areas? Basically, as has been said, if the substrate in itself is very light and would be sucked up by the vacuum, then don't dig into it. Swish the tube back and forth over it a few times, that should stirr up the gunk (or use your other hand to do so, but not too wildly). Then suck that stuff out Hope this helps, Ingo |
