hi,just wondering but my nitrates are rather high about 50-60 ppm but im not sure if i should do a water change or let it be for 2 days then do one if it doesnt go down.My reason for asking is b/c today i just got 2 java fern and some hornwart and was wondering if they will go down in a few days.i also(within 3-4days)have added 2 Amazon Swords and so sweet flag.
A little help would be appreciated, and thanks all in advance!

The plants won't make that much difference.

In a high light Co2 injected tank that's heavily planted No3 will be consumed at about 3-5ppm per day. Growth in a non Co2 tank is about 1/10th of that, even with a lot of plants. You can do the math for your own situation.

Water change.

I'd do at least a 50% water change now. The plants will consume some of the nitrate over time (especially hornwort), but it won't be so much that you'd notice a nitrate reduction in a few days. Also if you have lots of fish and/or feed them often, the amount of nitrate being produced in the tank could be more than what the plants will consume on a daily basis.

Cichlid,

I thought I told you already that you will have to increase your water change frequency and that your plants will only help a little.

Or was I just dreaming

Sure you should do one ASAP.

Let's see, 60 ppm nitrates, recommended level is less than 20 ppm, 50% water change, nitrates reduced to 30 ppm, Cichlid Kid did the 50% water change today because today was the tomorrow that he was talking about in yesterday's post...

so, nitrates should read 30 ppm, recommended level is less than 20 ppm, Kid needs to do a 50% water change tomorrow to reduce nitrates to 15 ppm...
