Bought a bunch of plants at my LFS the other day. The clerk had no idea what he was selling me and I got a whopping good deal. Here's the thing - I got 4 bunches of vals, three of them are what you would expect. The 4th has a bulb. Am I looking at a water onion here or so some vals grow from bulbs?

Also, my sagittaria subulata won't stay in the substrate. They really really want to float. This is probably why they are also called floating arrowhead. Anyone have any tips on holding them down?

Thanks all!

At a LFS the other day I say some strips that you can attach to a plant to hold it down. It looks like lead but apprently it is not. Even then I would remove them once the plant has established a good root system. You can also place some larger pieces of substrate around the base of the plant this helps to hold it down as well. If they do not have a good root system let them float until they do then place them into the substrate.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

hmm...i'll have to look for those. my substrate is really really light so using a few heavier pieces isn't an option. i'm thinking of adding an quarter inch of gravel over the "florabase" even though the manufacturer suggests against it.

the other three bunches that i got have primary roots at the bottom, and in my plant guide it shows the vallisneria that way as well.

the bulbed plant looks an awful lot like a val though, so i guess it's possible that it's a different variety.

any guesses guys?
