this is the first time ive attempted at plants and im just wondering if its normal for the water to smell a bit foul when doing water changes or am i doing something wrong?

i have ambulia, wisteria and nano anumbius (something like that) in a 20g running a eheim 2213 cannister and a
20w light which i was told wasnt enough but in the past few months the plants have thrived. also adding excel flourish to the water.

gravel vacs/water changes 25% weekly.
stock as per profile thanks

carpe_diem,

My water does not smell foul, it occasionally smells more like nature though. This would be the times when I have quite a few rotting (disintegrating) leaves in the water. I would think the source could be the Ambulia or the Wisteria, how are these plants looking in your tank these days? The Anubias nana (FYI) is most likely not the culprit.

Besides this observation, tell us more about the tank, like:
-how many plants (heavy planted or what)
-substrate
-other ferts used
-any recent fish deaths or - are all fish accounted for

Hope this helps a little,

Ingo

from what i can tell the plants are healthy and are growing steadily.
its medium planted i guess there is the wisteria and another red leafed plant which was hydro-something... ambula and the anubius...
gravel is just natural gravel about 1/4 inch thick however IMO it doesnt look like there is enough gravel.. could this be a problem?

ferts i just use that excel flourish and there arent any fish deaths that i know of..

Possible causes for a foul smell could be dead fish which you would know very quickly. Old plant life, leafes, and roots.
Q how deep and fine is the substrate also how long has it been in thr tank.

the gravel is natural.. just normal size gravel i guess not too small or too big.. its a 1/4 inch high and its been in the tank for nearly a year because i stripped the tank. it had been in there for around 4 years prior to stripping.

could it be the roots not being in enough gravel?

definately no deaths in tank...

Checking are you saying the gravel is 1/4 ins deep.
or are you saying it is a 1/4ins gravel.

Here lies the problem if it is 1/4 ind deep way way to shallow at least 3ins required for healthy plant growth. Gravel size sould be about 1-3mm.

I don't know if the roots are causing the smell, but you should definantly have more gravel, atleast another inch. Also your cories will love it.

ok bought some more gravel on the weekend so added about another 5kg which brings it to a much thicker state and the plants look to be sitting in it much better than before.. alot of the roots were getting a black tinge to them.

thanks for your help.. hopefully this fixes the problem!
