I have a 29 gallon tank that I would like to add some plants to.However the light that came with it is only 20 watts. Is there any type of plants other that water sprite that can grow in there? What would I need for say anubias nana or java fern? I just want some plants to help with ammonia.

You can add some floating plants, so that they'll absorb all the ammonia that you may have.
Anubias are low light plants & i think that they'll be fine in your tank.

What wattage makes co2 a must? I don't really want to do that co2 route.I have been thinking of adding a bit more light, but I have read that after you get a certain wattage,co2 is needed. If I added another say 20 watts to make it 40 watts would that be better? Or should I add 40 watts to make it 60? That is like 2 watts per gallon.I have tried amazon sword, but that didn't last long in my low light condition. What else would be need for low light plants?

"What wattage makes co2 a must?" - in higher light tanks 2wpg or higher.

"I don't really want to do that co2 route."- answered

"I have been thinking of adding a bit more light, but I have read that after you get a certain wattage,co2 is needed." - depends on the plants really, researching what plants you're interested in will help you learn their needs.. The basic plants I listed above, are low light and easy plants. They will get the bit of co2 they need from your existing tankwater. EASY. See how they do.

"If I added another say 20 watts to make it 40 watts would that be better? Or should I add 40 watts to make it 60?"
The next step if you were to upgrade is to 2wpg. Depending on what plants though, it may not be needed.. BUT if you want a higher variety of plants, 2wpg is the place to start.

"What else would be need for low light plants?" they should get what they need from your existing tapwater.
Hope this helped

At around 2wpg you could always use flourish excel. It's a liquid form of carbon but it doesn't work as well as co2 and over the long term will end up more expensive than getting a co2 system. It is really easy to use though and helps prevent some types of algae. It's also possible to setup a tank with lots of light and no co2 but it would take alot more planning and fine tuning to keep the plants growing and the algae not growing.
