i am coming up to the stage where i need to buy some new plants for my tank. i currently have a bit of java fern as i've heard that CL have no interest in eating it. However its about 20 australian bucks a bunch from my LFS. Are there any other plants I could look into getting that aren't quite as pricey? Anything that is hardy, has strong roots, doesn't need a lot of light and won't get eaten.

thanks!

PS. Sorry if this thread looks familiar...i asked the same question before everything went haywire with the forums a few weeks back but never saw the replies.

I have 99% Anubias and a few crypts all the anubias are either tied to rocks or drift wood.

They love to dig when the food is around therefore my plants never get disturbed od damaged

what's your current lighting look like? my one clown that i have left (from the original 4 ) doesn't bother any of my plants, and i have crypts, java fern, anubias, red temple, amazon sword and dwarf sag. some of these you won't be able to do without lots of light and co2, but you can do java fern, anubias, and crypts with low light and no co2 setup.

yeah, i tried the whole 'attaching-to-drift-wood' thing but it didn't take. I used a rubber band to tie the java fern roots to the (mangrove) wood and left it for about 3-4 weeks. I recently got rid of the rubber band and when I did, the roots still seemed very loose. A couple of hours later I saw that the java fern had drifted away from the wood. Now I've just semi-buried the roots into the gravel so it will at least stay where it is. Do you have any tips on how to graft plant roots onto wood?

i got my java fern to attach by tying it with cotton thread. my anubias was fine using just rubber bands, but in both cases it took a couple months before i could safely remove the thread/rubber band without the plant breaking free.

Complete side note here... but we've found that we can make bunches of our anacharis and some of the hornwort and use a cable tie around one end... then bury in the substrate and you've got a nice looking bunch. Most of the hornwort we just leave floating, tho. Just a suggestion.

it all depends on your lighting conditions, co2, blah blah etc etc. i've heard some cases taking 2 weeks, but mine took a couple months. your results may vary. void where prohibited.
