vals have a nasty habit of dying if you segregate them too soon, let it grow up a bit.

I would probally just cut the shoot from the main palnt and leave the baby until it is well established and got some decent root. I bought some real short scraggly letovers val at my LFS for a buck just to clean the rest from his tank when i replaced my pleco. They have now grown into four original plants and about 20-30 off shoots so if they are happy they will grown very fast and you will have many little ones to practice trimming with. Also if you leave the shoot you will countinue to get more all along the shoot as it grows out further

Being a Val I would just leave it alone this is what happens in nature and it will start to establish its self.
This is how many plants spread the runner is broken off and it drifts along and finally settles down and then it re establishes its self.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
