They are very much related, and some suppliers may be selling x-mas moss as tiawan moss and visa versa, but they are not technically the same species. I believe the difference is in how they branch. For aquarium purposes, you can use them pretty interchagably, though. I tend to prefer either of these mosses to more common java moss.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

DaFishMan,

Do you want to have another moss in the mix?

Well anyway , here it is: Bensaf uses a Moss called Singapore Moss, which might be the Taiwan moss you mentioned (or not). You can take a look at Bensaf’s moss [link=Here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Photo%20Booth/65135.html?200510111014" style="COLOR: #ff6633[/link].

Yes Ingo I was checking out Bensaf's tank already (and drooling) over the 'sea of green'..

I'm trying to straighten out my moss species as I have...

Regular Java Moss
Erect Moss
Christmas Moss
Taiwan Moss
Weeping Moss.

i guess I'll have to grow out the xmas and taiwan and compare them to see if they are different appearing or same.. Rather confusing !! Yes, have to check out 'singapore' 'willow' 'mini-moss' and 'pellia' as well (pellia a liverwort)

I once thought a moss was a moss, simple.
Boy did I ask for it !!!

You sure did ask for it.

And when you are done, we expect a detailed report with pictures here at FP

Have fun,

Ingo

PS: Bensaf must have some kleenex ready for all the drooling we do over his tank(s).

"You sure did ask for it." - Got that right !!

"And when you are done, we expect a detailed report with pictures here at FP" - I will fire up my trusty (or is that RUSTY) Canon. The christmas moss and taiwan will be neighbors, side by side in water bottles at the window LOL.

"PS: Bensaf must have some kleenex ready for all the drooling we do over his tank(s)." - or simply bawling, I'll take a towel please.

Regards,
DaFish

Well, in case you would like to see more Xmas Moss "in action" look at My 29G. Scroll to the bottom of the page and see the last 2 pictures (the one above is nice too).

But don't worry, no drooling will set in .

Ingo

My taiwan moss just got here and looks quite similar but not exactly the same. Part of that though is because it's a bit sad looking from taking over a week to get here. Have you seen this article: [link=http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/plants/Leong_Mosses.html]http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/plants/Leong_Mosses.html" style="COLOR: #C000C0[/link]

Yes, that's who I refer to as 'Doctor Moss'. LOL
Thanks Sham !

So it appears some people mis-i.d. the 2 and the only way I'll know is to subject to exact same growing conditions and compare. I hope I have 2 types of moss !
(My xmas moss still in the darn envelope LOL)

I also have some moss bought from the same place I bought the Singapore Moss (in Singapore) that was sold to me as Taiwan Moss. I'm as lost as anybody when it comes to all these mosses, so I'm just taking the guys word that it is in fact Taiwan Moss. You can see it in the pics of the new tank. It's the 2 groups either side of the Blyxa Japonica.

The differnce I see betwee it and Xmas moss are (in LF fashion)
- Darker deeper green color
- Same Xmas shape fronds but much thinner and finer
-Slower growing
- Doesn't need as much light
-More compact horizontal growth.
-Likes to collect thread algae ]:| maybe because of the slower growth rate.

I like it. It's a got an interesting color. The growth pattern and growth rate makes it easier to work with from an aquascaping point of view and the slower growth is easier to maintain. Keeps it's shape better. I can even live with the thread alage , it's a very small amount and almost invisible.

Yeah, yeah, I've algae too sometimes. Feeling better ?
