ive been battling beard algae for months.ive tried using nitrate/nitrite reducers as well as trying to lower the time my lights are on and vacuuming more often.today i finally broke.......i got some "algae destroyer" tabs today. i know people dont recommend using them but my tank is really overcrowded with beard algae and my substrate is practically brown so the water quality cant be too good for my fish.i was just wondering how they affect fish/plants etc.

Hi,
While they (the medications) do work, remember that when
it kills off the algae, the decaying fragments will polute
the water, and you will need to do a massive water change.
Follow that with regular water changes every week of about
20% for the next few weeks.
Look up that form of algae, and see what factors promote
its growth, and then don't replicate them or the algae
will return. Frequently, when we eradicate one form of
algae, another springs up in its place to fill the void.
Figure out what caused it - High nutrients, high nitrate,
excessive light, excessive light duration, etc. and get
rid of the factors that caused it, or it will come back
with a vengence.

IF you follow the directions that came with that medication,
then your fish and plants should be fine.
