It sucks up nutrients faster when floating. As long as you have nitrate present and a decent amount of light, it will grow quite fast. If you hold down a length of it against the gravel, it may grow roots and anchor. It actually does best in most tanks floating where it forms ropes up to several feet in length and provides shade, and shelter for the tank and the fish. "A" 40 watt bulb is not enough for a 125G tank and having it, or any plant grow under those conditions would be pretty dicy.
