i wasn't expecting them to be this big... are there several varieties? my other plant (same shop same day) has leaves about 1/4 the size, if that.

Hi,
Yes, there are several varieties and stores that sell
them (Walmart, etc.) don't sell one variety per package
they are all mixed. You might leave the cover off
the tank, use overhead light, and watch them flower.

I "think" I read in another thread here that someone
kept trimming them before they reached the surface
and that kept them small. Don't do it till you find
that other thread though. I'd hate to have you snip
them off and wind up killing the plant.

Yes, it is normal for banana plant leaves to get that large, mine have, only they are round, not oval, and their color markings are different so I would guess there are different varieties. I would also guess that it has only recently started sending up monster lilies? Mine sent out small, then large, and now is flowering.
