Hi,
With these plants, the bananas are actually similiar to a
camel's hump. By that I mean that they store nutrients in
them. When you plant them you plant only the roots not
the bananas. The "Bananas" should just touch the gravel
and the roots growing out of the bottoms are what is planted
in the gravel. If you plant the bananas, they will become
mushy, and the plant die.

Bannana plants, IMO, are a waste of time. They are unpredicatable growers and may disintegrate in front of you for under the most minute of changes in suroundings. Extremely high lights are necessary to get a starving plant back onto it's feet again, and for all that trouble, those roots are very aquascape-unfriendly, not to mention difficult to conceal. If you like the broad leafed look, go with nymphea.

Nymphea also refers to dwarf and tiger lilly species, which are QUITE suitable for the average home aquaria, or rather, "fisktanks".

The banana plants look cool but I have yet to see any surviving in an aquarium. I've killed off 4 myself.

i can't believe people can kill banana lillies! i thought they were the weed of the aquarium world! i keep them as a great source of cover - the fish feel so safe with them, imo. they are incredibly fast growers and i thin mine out fortnightly. and they make the tank look so beautiful when you look up at the surface.

Well, they start off pretty well, but any small shift towards unfavorable conditions will kill off the leaves, and the bannanas will go into a state of atrophy, which can only be corrected with HIGH lighting (4+ wpg).
