The fish constantly root around in the substrate and up root the plants. Others are very territorial and will move anything that is not glued down so that they have an unobstructed view in 360 degrees as they guard their piece of heaven. Larger ones, like Oscars, have been known to flip rocks out of the tank, and smash into hanging heaters to get rid of them. That being said, I'm sure that some of the smaller ones will work, and that someone will shortly see your post and say "I've got xxx, & yyy plants in my tank." They might get eaten up a bit or ripped apart, but as long as there's enough light and nutrients they'll probably grow back. Duckweed tends to do very well because it's so many seperate plants and they can't possibly kill them all ![]() |

Most dwarves don't bother plants (a couple, like the ram, may dig a little at spawning time), so nearly any plants would be fine with them. Grow what will do best in your conditions (level of light, substrate, nutrients, etc.). Good growing! ![]() |

Right now I only have simple amazon swords, which none of the fish have bothered with. I also have floating anacharis and hornwort. I plan to get another type of filler plant to go with the swords, again keeping it rather simple. With dwarf cichlids maybe you could look for plants to keep in a SA or CA theme, something of a biotope. Check into plants that interest you in terms of lighting requirements and what plants are available in your area. 95% of my plants I order online; even with shipping costs I've found them to be less expensive and a better selection than at lfs here. Good luck ![]() ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
