How long does it take the buds on a lava fern leaf to fall off and become a new plant. I have about 8 new buds popping up on my ferns and I was wondering if I should clip them off or if they will fall off on their own.

I have a couple of questions for you.

Lighting?
Co2?
Ferts?

I like to let mine fall off. The bigger the better. That way you can actually do something with them.

I let them fall off and float about for a few weeks before planting them.

Once your mother plant gets to this size:

You get plantlets almost every day. Just wait it out; it's best to let them drop naturally. In fact, my thirty gallon is planted entirely with the offspring of the shown mother plant:

The thirty:

They will fall of when they are ready this will depend on their growing conditions. I would let them float until they reach a good size again depending on your conditions.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

Very low matainance tank.
no Co2 no ferts 1 WPG.

The plants are slightly smaller than the ones in the first link. I checked my other ferns and I have about 10 - 15 plantlets in total.

What are those ferns anchored to? I'm thinking about planting the whole tank with javas, but I only have 2 small pieces of driftwood. Can I anchor them to large pebbles in the gravel?

Also, do your's have roots? Only a few of mine have them. The rest just have long, pointy stems.

The one in the first pic is about 16" tall just placed into the gravel. The rhizome is untouched, of course. There are a LOT of roots.
