i just wanted to know if my carbon inserts in my Fluval are removing some of the stuff in my plant fertilizer? i put carbon in to keep water clear as ive got bogwood in there. plus doesnt the light penetrate clear water better than Tannan stained water? i dont mind the brown water look, but maybe my Ottos and Tetras to come wont like it?

loulou,

The fish don’t mind the brown water at all, be assured .

Has the bogwood been pre-soaked? If so, for how long? Have you seen it stain the water?

I believe that Carbon DOES remove some nutrients but I am a little unsure which ones and how much. I would suggest you make the effort and read through tetratech’s 72G log in this forum as he had some issues and (in the end he used Purigen) we discussed some carbon issues there. Or maybe he reads this thread and elaborates on it directly.

I also think the carbon will remove some of the ferts. Also the older it gets it can cause problems. I would take the DW out and give it a good cleaning and possibly a lot more soaking. If you can add an extra layer of fine filter material in place of the Carbon this might help as well.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

the DW was soaked for 3 weeks in freshly replaced water weekly. its the type thats rounded and hollow in middle. its quite thin and in some places when i soaked it became flimsy so i broke off these thin bits to leave the thicker part only. the wood is spotless, i scrubbed it well.i got it from LFS so its safe. i would say its releasing very little tannens but the bit it is the carbon is removing. I put carbon in filter when i first set it up as i wanted water to remain tannen free. however my carbon will be if not already due for changing, i will take it out and replace with media and this will see if wood is leaching. as i said i dont mind brown water but since having crystal clear water i prefer the later.
I though Ottos like clean water, does this mean clear water too? or are they ok with brownish water?
