What makes you say that about the clowns Alex? They should do very well in a planted tank.

Hi,

They don't i have a pair of clown loaches and 2 pairs of yoyo loaches (more less same size 4 in) they are playfull, yes, but not to an extend of knocking everything, in fact they love to hide between plants and play tag, but they never disturb the plant per se.

you only have to worry about them knocking stuff over, after the pass 8 inch or so, their like plecos at that size, they dont mean to knock it all over, but at the size just the swing of their tail can pull up a plant that doesnt have a strong root system.

I think you will discover if you watch very carefully especially after feeding, that some of the food gets caught at the base of the plant and they just want that piece of food.

That is one of the reasons I have 99% Anubias fixed to either drift wood or rocks.

My clown loaches are little rascals! They really like to nuzzle the substrate around, digging while they search for food. This is only a problem for newly planted plants, and once the root system is well developed it stops being such a problem.

Sometimes I find puncture-marks on the lower leaves of my temple plants, and I think the loaches might be responsible for these. They're kind of hard to describe... like half-circle cuts with a hanging chad!

My main advice when aquascaping a loach tank is to make sure you have plenty of tight, cozy hiding spaces. They definitely seem to prefer dark spaces where they can only just squeeze in, rather than the larger caves preferred by some fish species.
