i plan on planting my tank in about a week or so and i have some questions about how many plants i should get. ive lookd on numerous websites at their "lowlight" packages, but most seem to contain an awful lot of plants - im not sure id know what to do with all of them! ive asked for plant advice earlier on this website and i was told that anubias, java fern, crypts, vals and hornwort are good low light plants. what is a good number of plants to get for a 46 gallon tank. dimensions are 36 x 12 (16 at the bow) x 20. also, are any of those good background plants? thanks for any replies!

I don't know much about plants, only having a few low-lights myself, but if you want to heavily plant your tank, it would be a good idea to get a substrate designed for it, maybe think about increasing the WPG too depending what you're at. The number of plants total would depend on the sizes, light requirements, and heights of the plants. Just like fish in an aquarium you don't get all of them at once normaly, so its best to just feel it out.

Hi,
The plants you mentioned are great and should thrive
very nicely in the tank. As far as quantity is
concerned, it probably would be better if you look
at the plants on one of the plant sites such as
Arizona Gardens, or Tropica, and see what each plant
looks like when mature, and get a good idea of their
sizes. Then decide upon what "look" you want and
how you might go about arranging it. Then order
some plants.
It's a good idea to think small quantities
and let them grow into the space. IMO that is better
than ordering (buying) bunches and have them either
over tax the system, or out grow the tank and have
to either throw them away or buy more tanks.

Remember that a tall tank will disburse the light
on its way to the bottom and effectively lower the
WPG rating.
