I need a plant for my 4' tank to serve as a background plant. I have crypts growing well, but hygrophilia, wisteria, and japanese rush just seem to get eaten or melt away. There is 80 watts of light, but just normal gravel substrate. However, the tank has been runing for months, so i'm sure there's enough nutrients in the gravel for plants. What can i use?

Well you can go with Saggitarias any kind, they are hardy and easy to grow in your tank giant saggitaria will be fine, also vallisnerias they are easy and hardy plants fast propagation, also any kind of echinodorus, i recomend amazon sword rubin, is an intresting plant and has shades that go from bricht green to dark red.

I second the Sag. I have very had, high ph, and highly alkaline water. It has always grown for me. Jungle val also does well in my conditions. Anachris and hornwort can be used in low light conditions, they are floating or can be planted in gravel. Aponogeton and dwarf lily bulbs also are hardy and get tall.

Reason your hygro didnt grow is probably due to lighting. 80w on a 4ft tank isnt alot. If you have rock or wood that you can attach plants to can use anubias or java fern attatched to it to get some height.

If you do crypts without a problem, try a Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae. It is an easy plant that can withstand a wide range of temperature and water conditions. Much like a narrow leaf aponogeton it will growq up to 60cm in length.

go for the vals... just watch out though, cause when they start growing the reproduce very fast. mine have grown out from the back of the tank to the middle, and are starting to overtake my crypts. the only bad thing about them is, you need a lot of them to get a "dense look". even then, you'll still be able to see through them to the back of the tank. try asian ambulia if you want something bushier.
