You can set a timer for that and forget it, or, you could do 8 hours in the "winter" months, and 10 Hours during your "Summer" months. By that I mean give your plants between 8 to 10 hours of light. You can shift that time period so to include the sunlight shining on the tank, and shortening the length of time the lights are actually on and have them go off when you would normally be going to bed.
