Many people assume that this is the main root, and bury it, which Java fern does not seem to like. Anubias, btw, is similar; I've covered the roots, but not the stem, and it's doing great for me. |

You should try and keep the rhizome unburied, which is the horizonal stem section that those black roots grow out of. |
