i bought a java moss ball like 4 months ago. i seperated it into different tanks and now it seems to get larger. was this right? if i seperate some of the moss will it grow faster than if i left it. ps i have no special things for it. just water. no plant food, co2 etc.

The only reason it would grow faster if you spread it out is because more light gets to more of the moss, whereas if you had left it in a clump the moss on the insides wouldn't get enough light and would probably slowly die.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

java moss is cool. you cannot kill it, reducing its light availabilty merely makes it grow differently, and fish love to spawn in it. i separate my balls on a regular basis to create new growths with no problems.

I've just tied a whole heap of it to a bit of drift wood..so far so good! bits have lost colour and other bits are going crazy...

that thing doesn't even have to have water.

yes, the more thinly you spread it, and the more light you allow it to get, the more it will grow. it can grow so fast and so vastly, i had to move it to a darker corner once, after removing 2/3s of it, because it layed shadow on other plants already.
it is a rather efficient spawning locations too, because adult fish can't get in after the fry.

just as what oters said...its true..what u can do is..just tie it up to slow down the growth by preventing light goin thru it...and u can always throw out in the garbage the excess...avoid flushing it in the tloilet.

very nice tank!

the heater and the reflections are a bummer, though.
any chance to hide the heater somewhere and do something with reflections?

Just had some Java moss delivered today. Wanting to attach it to a piece of bare driftwood. I am going to use cotton thread to tie it down, can someone tell me how long it will take for the moss to anchor securely?

Thanks.

Not too long, usually takes a couple of weeks depending on the tank. Once the cotton thread rots and falls off the moss should be secure.

It depends on the wood you attach it to. Hardwoods and rock are most suitable for growing moss.

Thanks guys. I have tied the moss to the bogwood, which has been in the tank for a while. It is very soft and slightly brittle. Hope the moss will latch on quickly...
