I just got some java moss and fern for my 45g. I also got a 96 watt light. I know they dont need much light, but would it hurt them? Because I might get diffrent plants that do need the light. Also how long should i leave the light on for the moss and fern? When i do get plants that do need good light, do I leave the light on for 12 hours...thats what i heard. one more thing, When I tie it down to drift wood or a rock, so that it will stick to it, how much do i need to put in 1 spot?Just checkin. Thanks for any posts.

They will do fine under that lighting. If you increase it any more, you might want to locate them in the corner section of the tank, or under something to shade them some. As for how much in each place, that is purlely up to you.

There is no reason to suggest they will not do well under those conditions.

I have seen the Java Moss tied in good sized lumps and well tied down to help it grow to it host. The time will depend on you total tank conditions. As they say only time will tell.

My java fern and moss started out in a .8wpg 55gal and went through a brackish (sg1.014) tank and also into a 2.4wpg tank. I'm still trying to get rid of the moss. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just give it time to adjust and it should continue to grow.

i cannot comment on the java fern, but java moss is one of the plants that thrives under a variety of light conditions. anchor points (driftwood, free floating, etc) and light intensity produce different looking moss, but all are healthy. mine is currently free floating in about .8o watts per gallon and is growing impressively.

depending on aquarium conditions, it may look like anything from a moss ball to astro turf.

worry not- just wait and see.

Don't worry about the java moss, anchor it down somehow...I have a decoration sitting on mine and it does fine...Tries to take over the tank on occassion, but all is fine...your's will be too, I'm sure...

I was recomended to do little balls of it and stuck it or staple it or tie it on to a surface, well it took over that surface which was a pice of drift woos, once i got kind of sick of it and took out the wood, cleaned it and scrubed it to get rid of the moss, it looked clean so i put it back in, 3 days later new moss shoots where growing out of the wood again. So, needless to say, it's hardy, it's adaptable, and it;s undestructable!
