IMO it's best to take them off.
For most plants you can simply make a trench in the substrate then trim off the lower leaves (an inch or so) and gently bend but not break the stem into an 'L' shape then cover over with the substrate .
If you have active diggers in the tank you can pile the substrate a bit higher around each stem by the time the pile has worn down they should have enough of a root system to stay in place.

Some plants like java fern don't like to be planted and my die...it depends on what you've bought.

I have always removed it as lead could/will cause problems for your fish.

I use to place a few small rocks around the base of the newly planted plant, this would stop most fish from digging them up.

It's better to take the lead off & bury the roots in the gravel.

It's especially good to take them off of stem plants, as they smoosh the stems together and the bottoms will rot. I've seen this... gotten plants from the LFS like that, too.

As a side note... LOVE your avatar!

I would most definately take them off as LEAD is not a good thing in a fish tank.

As already said bend in an L shape or even put more rock in the tank.

I'd still suggest trying to get the weights off @some point. You don't need to do it all @once, but seeing as lead is banned for use in any eating or servingware (in the US anyway) because of poisoning I'd think it best to remove it for the fish as well...although someone correct me if I'm wrong on it's effect on fish....

i am goingto uplift the plants and replant them without the lead where possible, some of the plants are heavily rooted half way up the stem, not sure if these need cuttings somehow.
wendy has started a seperate post on this, please reply to that.
thanks
