I've probably asked this before, but what plants are best for a tank that sits near a window? I don't have a light for this tank yet but i want to keep more plants in it. I;ve got one type that seems to be doing fine but i want more of a variety in there. I will eventually keep cories in there.

Hi,
Your post is a difficult post to answer. It appears that
the only light the tank gets is incidental light from a
nearby window. You don't mention, or show pictures of the
type of plant already in the tank.

With most of us, we have a light over the tank and we know
what that light is rated at. Thus it is easy to divide
the wattage of the light by the capacity of the tank, and
come up with the watts per gallon (wpg).

One of the categories that plants are divided into is
by how much light they need to thrive. The categories
are Low ~1 - 1.5wpg), Medium (~2wpg), and High (~3+wpg).

For an idea of the plants that are considered low light
plants and what they look like, try this site:

What about the extra low light plants?
Like the moss that's been sitting on my friend's desk in a fish bag for over a month... and it still looks alive and healthy.

the tank is right in front of the window and gets a lot of afternoon light. I don't know what the plant is that is already in there, it seems pretty hardy.

I think it might be a crypt of some sort. It's doing really well in my other tank (that actually has a decent light).

Uh... java fern and java moss. Those pretty much could live in the dark, I swear. Those would be the only ones that I would really suggest without knowing what kind of light you have.

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~
